Explaining a career break in a German Bewerbung
German applications still favour chronological Lebensläufe. Gaps draw the eye. Pretending they do not exist wastes interview time; over-explaining them signals insecurity.
Name the period briefly on the CV (“Familienphase”, “Pflege Angehöriger”, “Aufenthalt im Ausland”), then use the Anschreiben to show what you maintained: language practice, volunteer Stunden, short Zertifikatskurse, or project work.
What hiring managers usually want
They want proof you can re-enter a weekly rhythm, that your skills are current enough for Einarbeitung, and that your requested hours match the Stelle. Return-to-work planning sessions rehearse those three points until they sound factual rather than apologetic.
If you are changing fields after the break, connect one transferable responsibility to the new role — Schichtkoordination, Kundenkontakt, documentation — instead of listing every household task.
