Reading local demand before you retrain

City buildings representing regional labour markets

National Fachkräftemangel headlines are poor guides for a personal reskilling decision. A shortage in München does not create openings in a small town in Rheinland-Pfalz.

Before committing to a pathway, look at three layers: open Stellenanzeigen within your realistic commute, Ausbildungs- and Weiterbildungsplätze that employers actually co-fund, and the age profile of current staff in local Betriebe — which hints at upcoming replacements.

A simple weekly check

  1. Collect twenty recent ads for your target role within 45–60 minutes’ travel.
  2. Note required certificates, language level, and shift patterns.
  3. Call two Ausbildungsbetriebe or Weiterbildungsträger and ask how many graduates found work last year — not how many started the course.

Employment consulting grounded in career-change planning treats this check as non-negotiable. Fancy course brochures come second.
